Five Tips for Finding Love, Not Lies, this Valentine’s Day

It’s that time of year when love is in the air, and the mad dash begins to find Mr. or Miss Right, just in time to be your Valentine. But not so fast. February is also prime hunting season for online dating scammers, poised to strike on hopeless romantics. In fact, research shows that on some online dating sites, as many as one in ten profiles are fake. So if you’re looking to connect with a cupid, and not a catfish, here are five safety tips:

  1. Don’t share your personal information, such as last name or phone number, until you’ve built a reasonable level of trust. In today’s virtual world, it’s far too easy for someone to conduct a quick search online and show up at your doorstep the next day.
  1. Run in the other direction if you’re asked for a loan. Unless your name is Bank of America or Wells Fargo, requests for an urgent wire transfer, help with hospital bills or financing for expired Visas are a big warning sign.
  1. Engage in “local” conversation and look for red flags. For example, if someone says they’re from Pasadena, California, and they’ve never heard of the Rose Bowl, that’s a big watch out. Also be on high alert for old fashioned language and poorly formed sentences.
  1. Beware of people who are overly forward or aggressive. Most catfishers move quickly, professing their love and sharing over-the-top compliments far too soon.
  1. Screen your date with bTru, a new mobile dating app, that lets you see who people really are before exchanging numbers or wasting time and money. You can communicate, run background checks, and see authentic pics with this one simple tool — and it’s free to download.

Say Goodbye to Online Dating as You Know It with bTru

lies9kToday is the day we take online dating back from the phishers and the phonies.
We’ve heard from thousands of online daters around the world who have shed a very bright light on the massive problems associated with the online dating experience. Stories of heartbreak, fraud, stalking and stealing, and of course the lies, lies, lies. Just browsing the headlines from the past few months alone is enough to make you give up online dating for good.

But starting today, we’re arming online daters with a new way to guard against the bad apples. bTru is for anyone looking for an authentic connection. It’s a place for you to quickly and easily get to know someone – without sharing your contact information, full name, or accepting a ‘friend request’ through your personal social networking sites.

When you invite someone to connect on bTru, you can text and call, view current and unaltered photos, browse through the basics like marital status, career and education, and even run a background check. All BEFORE your full identity is ever revealed.

And this is just the beginning. We don’t think anyone should be blind on their first date. So we won’t be satisfied with our app until honesty is restored to online dating, and everyone has a fair shot at a true connection.

Happy dating,

The Beginning of bTru

online dating lies

For our first blog post, we thought it would be fitting to share a bit about how this all began. So here it goes…

Over the past several years, nearly everyone we know has been involved in online dating — friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, you name it. And while a handful have been lucky in love from the get-go, most have kissed way more than their fair share of frogs. What’s worse, many online daters have surrendered to the idea that it’s all part of the process.

Sadly, the dating stories range from flat out disturbing to deeply disappointing. And they’ve become far too commonplace. We’ve heard it all — from the guy who posted a profile pic from 20 pounds and 20 years ago, to the person who wasn’t “technically” divorced, to the six month relationship that ended with a desperate request for an urgent wire transfer to save the life of Miss Too-good-to-be-true.

It’s time to stop the madness and online dating lies. And that’s where we come in.

We’re expert problem solvers with a ton of technical know-how. We started bTru because we identified a HUGE gap in the online dating world. Studies show up to 80% of online dating profiles have something in common: lies. So we decided to do something about it.

We talked to everyone we know, read nearly every online dating article ever written, attended industry events, signed up for countless dating sites, and conducted our own research studies with online daters. We even spoke with leading dating company representatives, dating coaches and consultants, and interviewed hundreds of online daters themselves. What we found was nearly all daters share the desire for honest relationships. And importantly, they want to rule out the fakes and phonies early onbut don’t have the tools to do so.

So, we asked ourselves, what if there was an app that painted an authentic picture of the people you’re interested in BEFORE you waste time and emotional energy? And once you’re interested, what if you could connect and communicate, and even run a background check, all while keeping your contact details and full identity private?

Well in just a few weeks, that will be possible for the first time since online dating was born. We can’t wait to make bTru available to every online dater who is interested in the truth. Because we don’t think anyone should be blind on their first date.
